PeerTeach: Teaching Learners to Do Learner-Centered Teaching

Abstract One-on-one tutoring is the most effective teaching arrangement. Most schools and families, however, cannot afford to provide each child with a tutor. Peer in classrooms, more feasible scalable learning arrangement, increases for both tutors tutees, but peer tutors’ efficacy often limited by their didactic disempowering approaches. Two interventions distinctly different designs were developed test viability of online, training foster students’ adoption learner-centered methods. To compare these intervention approaches, two randomized control experiments conducted 198 middle school math students. Both trainings increased frequency that employed strategies, evident clickstream data from virtual scenarios tutee reflections following real-life tutoring. Shifts behaviors significantly boosted at every level tutor content mastery. This suggests students use strategies can greatly improve technological solutions scale this type training.
